Anyone recall that I participated in the International Fiber Collaborative project last year, well, early this year when I finished? No? I posted about it here and even here.
Let me sum up. Artist Jennifer Marsh came up with the brilliant idea to essentially upholster an abandoned, unused gas station as social commentary on our country’s dependance on oil products (I hope I got that right- forgive me if I am not completely with it, I’m too excited.)
So, I sent my square. (You can see it here if you are so inclined.) Well, I got notice she had received it, but I checked and checked on the pages where you can view the squares on her site and alas, mine was not there. I was sad. Then I got an email about the installation of the project (it looks pretty freakin’ awesome in the completed state) and I found this:

Look closely, verrrrry closely. THAT square on the front right corner is all MINE baby. (Well I did have some help, thanks to the Northeast Georgia Yarnsters) but see that mitered square- that was me for rizzle dizzle. I’d recognize that bulgy hunk of crap anywhere. I’m so very pleased. I aided in an important work of art, a large-scale politically-minded cozy.

I’m knitting squares. Lots of ‘em. To participate in this project. The “we’re covering an abandoned gas station in a large knit cozy” project.

I’ve had some help, thankfully, but I am about 1 foot shy of the 3′x3′ square (and I haven’t started seaming yet, so I have a ways to go.) I’m taking this opportunity to try out some new tricks. I learned how to do mitered squares and they are very, very pretty. The pattern is from Mason Dixon Knitting- and I may be inspired to use my odds and ends to make a Mitered Blankie, maybe not out of SOCK yarn like this awesome lady (I’m not quite that deranged dedicated.)
I’ll make a few more squres and seam the summovabitch together and attach a large (or extremely large) crocheted border in order to achieve the necessary dimensions. Last night I made a red Georgia dishcloth -for my alma mater I suppose- uh- woof?- to add to the batch. I couldn’t find a chicken design (for Gainesville, the poultry capital of the world don’tcha know) but I settled for a rooster that I’ll make tonight after I teach my first knitting class! I’m a little nervous, but excited too. It is a basic knitting for beginners meeting for four Wednesdays for an hour and a half. I’m bringing handouts and books and examples of work. Let’s hope I don’t suck too bad as it would seem that I have a cold invading my body today at a frightening pace, which means I probably won’t get to go and visit world’s cutest baby this weekend. (Boo.) Maybe I’ll be well enough by Saturday to knit with the gals (Yay!)
